Wednesday 13 March - Embedded Systems Conference, Booth # 429 - Running counter to the bad news from the industry so common in recent months, German-based embedded RISC/ DSP microchip specialist Hyperstone is one of the few semiconductor success stories in 2001. Defying the general downturn in the industry, Hyperstone achieved a significant improvement in financial performance over 2000. Shipments exceeded 1 million devices with improved profit-ability.
This rare success story has been achieved through Hyperstone’s continuing focus on markets requiring the most efficient RISC/DSP solution in cost-sensitive embedded applications such as consumer/multimedia, biometrics and speech analysis products. Another major volume growth area is Flash memory cards and controllers.
Hyperstone’s innovative E1 microcontroller design has gained a number of major OEM design wins recently, including new top-selling 2.3Megapixel digital still cameras.
SecuGen Corporation, a world leader in fingerprint biometric systems, has also adopted the Hyperstone architecture to power its new range of OEM developer kits.
This outstanding performance is now accelerating further, with a spectacular start to the current year. January bookings are already at 40% of the previous full year, and monthly billings more than doubled compared to Jan 2001. Projections for 2002 anticipate this rapid growth to con-tinue, with expected shipments in the range 3 to 4 million devices based on Hyperstone’s E1 RISC/DSP core.
"The Hyperstone core provides an innovative solution to power one of our newest fingerprint recognition OEM developer kits for designers of fingerprint embedded applications," stated Won Lee, VP of engineering at SecuGen Corporation. "We were particularly impressed by the additional speed provided by the dedicated DSP functions of the Hyperstone device in our ap-plication, and by the simplicity of the
software development task in a device which combines both RISC and DSP capabilities.
Dr. Matthias Steck, VP Sales and Marketing at Hyperstone commented, “We are greatly en-couraged by our rapidly increasing success in these fast growing sectors. Hyperstone is very proud to be working with an industry leader such as SecuGen, one of the largest companies worldwide in the biometrics sector. By making effective use of our RISC/DSP microcontroller technology, SecuGen offers OEMs access to a complete low-cost development solution for fin-gerprint recognition systems in embedded applications. This builds on their existing success in the sector, as they have already introduced their patented biometrics technology into a wide range of applications and industries including airports, enterprise networks, healthcare, e-business, banking, building security and many more.
Steck continued, "Providing a fast track to market is one of the major factors in our success in consumer digital imaging applications. Camera developers can move from prototype to pro-duction in the shortest time possible, using a smooth and well-tested migration path from the stand-alone Hyperstone E1-32XS processor towards a highly-integrated single-chip ASSP so-lution using our macro cell IP. Hyperstone’s considerable experience in this sector also pro-vides access to a complete portfolio of additional IP designs, as well as an experienced design support team, further essential elements in the implementation of a successful digital still cam-era application."
