Hyperstone beats industry blues with record 2001 results and spectacular start to new year 2002 (English)
2001 Volume Shipments Maintained with Significantly Increased Profits; January Bookings Already 40% of Previous Full Year; Major Success with HP Photosmart Digital Camera Application; Dr. Harald Westerholt, former Managing Director of Siemens ElectroCom, Appointed as CEO
Running counter to the bad news so common in recent months, German-based embedded RISC/DSP microchip specialist Hyperstone AG is one of the few semiconductor success stories in 2001. Defying the general downturn in the industry, Hyperstone achieved a significant improvement in financial performance over 2000. Shipments exceeded 1 million devices with improved profitability.
This outstanding performance is now accelerating further, with a spectacular start to the current year. January bookings are already at 40% of the previous full year, and monthly billings more than doubled compared to Jan 2001. Projections for 2002 anticipate this rapid growth to continue, with expected shipments in the range 3 to 4 million devices.
This rare success story has been achieved as a result of the cost-effective embedded solutions offered by Hyperstone’s E1 range of microcontrollers its continuing focus on the markets for consumer/multimedia electronics. This success includes a number of major OEM design wins in digital still camera applications, including HP’s new range of 2.3Megapixel cameras, the Photosmart 318 and 612, and Compact Flash memory cards.
“We are very pleased to be working with Hyperstone using their RISC/DSP macro cell architecture for our latest 2.3Megapixel camera range,” stated Jan Wölfle, European Product Manager, Digital Cameras, for Hewlett-Packard Europe. “We believe the performance of the Hyperstone core design in this application to be one of the key factors which have helped push the new Photosmart 318 into position as one of the top 3 selling cameras in Europe. HP is now the second largest manufacturer of digital cameras in Germany, and number one in the USA”.
Dr. Harald Westerholt, who was appointed CEO of Hyperstone on 1 September 2001, commented, “We are very excited about our continued success in consumer digital imaging market. Our OEM customers in this sector can now perform a smooth migration from a digital camera design using the stand-alone Hyperstone E1-32XS processor towards a highly-integrated single-chip ASSP solution using our macro cell IP. We can also offer access to a complete portfolio of additional IP designs, as well as an experienced design support team, both essential elements in the implementation of a successful digital still camera application."
These sales into consumer electronics product applications are expected to continue to ramp up rapidly in 2002, with further volume coming on stream in other low-cost multimedia, embedded internet and consumer handheld applications. Hyperstone’s E1 core is also being used in major development projects in a number of other sectors, including biometric control, speech recognition/control and noise cancellation applications.

Notes for the Editor

Hyperstone – The Processor Architecture
The standard Hyperstone core architecture provides both a fast RISC processor for data and control functions and a powerful DSP unit for efficient algorithm execution—without the silicon overhead, excessive power consumption and software complexity of a conventional dual-core design. The major advantage of the Hyperstone core is that the RISC and DSP functions are designed as a single processor model and instruction stream, rather than a combination of two different cores on a single piece of silicon.

Hyperstone AG – The Company
Hyperstone Electronics is a fab-less microprocessor design company, founded in 1990, in Konstanz, Germany. Staff members have up to 30 years experience in design, production, sales and marketing of computer systems and peripheral devices. Technical development takes place in Germany and Taiwan with sales channels operating through Hyperstone's global network of distributors and representatives (US, Europe, Taiwan, Korea, Japan), serving customers worldwide. Leading silicon foundries in Taiwan provide wafer-subcontracting services.
